Making
Bits and Pieces Mosaics: A Free Two-day Workshop, Friday and Saturday, June 26-27, 10-3:30 at the Athens Cultural Center Shard art, memory ware or pique assiette (French for "stolen from plates") is a folk art technique that brings new life to pieces of broken china, glass, fiqurines,etc. This class, lead by Marlene Marshall, will take you from design to cementing and grouting as you learn how to make mosaics for a terra cotta garden pot. Students are encouraged to bring their own collection of broken china, but there will also be a supply of shards provided by the instructor. Marlene Marshall is a watercolorist/collage artist, author of Making Bits and Pieces Mosaics, Shell Chic (Storey Publishing), arts/educator and avid gardener. Her very sucessful book Making Bits and Pieces Mosaics is a valuable resource on how to give new life to broken treasures through the surprisingly simple folk art technique. Books will be available the day of workshop. She has appeared on the Home & Garden and DIY networks. To reserve a place in
the Mosaics Workshop, call the Athens Cultural Center at (518) 945-2136
and clearly leave your name and telephone number. Class size is
limited. |

ADVANCE NEWS
RELEASE RiverPride follows in the tradition of similar events taking place in early Summer in New York City, Boston, Albany, New Paltz and other communities across the nation. Since the late 1980s, the word “diversity” speaks to the role gay and lesbian, transgendered individuals have played in the health and vitality of America; and the unity of experience all citizens share in our American life. Community groups of all persuasions, sharing the same goals, are invited to participate in this community event, held rain or shine. Other highlights of the day include a guided “Kayak Paddle”, sign up required; shops and art galleries along Main Street staying open throughout the day and evening; a variety of restaurants and cafes serving a diversity of cuisines; and entertainment at participating nightclubs. Catskill, like many other Hudson River towns, has experienced a dramatic renewal over the past decade. Catskill is easily accessible from exit #21 of the New York State Thruway, midway between Albany and Kingston. The historic city of Hudson is only 10 miles away. Driving distance from New York City is 112 miles. Fore more information or to participate in the Inaugural Parade, community-based groups can call (518) 943-0420. THE
NATIONAL SOCIETY OF DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
|
|||
|
(Motto: God, Home and Country) warmly welcomes new and prospective members to its monthly meetings. The multiple mission of this venerable old organization-patriotism, education, and historical preservation-remains timely and vital in today's world, and DAR maintains a significant presence in our community. The locally based ON-TI-ORA CHAPTER customarily meets on the second Saturday of the month from September through June at various locations in or near Catskill. Good fellowship is always a part of the program. Women of all ages who believe they may be descended from Revolutionary War Patriots (not limited just to those individuals who saw actual combat) are encouraged to attend meetings as our guests. Assistance in establishing one's line of descent for membership is readily available. Interested persons may simply come to the meeting or, for more information, call Chapter Regent Laura Rutkowski at 943-9500. The calendar for the
remaining spring meetings for the ON-TI-ORA CHAPTER is as follows:
April 11, 2009 - 1:30 p.m., at American Legion Hall, Athens Conservation Program: "Our Planet Earth, our Home, our Heritage" May 9, 2009 - 1:30 p.m., at Vedder Library, Coxsackie Annual reports, election of officers, memorial service June 13, 2009 - 12:00
- At Anthony's Banquet House, Leeds Co-host: Hendrick Hudson Chapter,
