Thomas
Cole House Announces
Fifth Annual Summer Party The guests of the 2007 Summer Party on the lawn of the Main House at Thomas Cole National Historic Site. |
|||
|
The highlight of the season at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site is happening on Saturday, July 19th at 5 pm. Hundreds of supportive party-goers will enjoy cocktails on the porch of the home of the founder of the Hudson River School, over-looking the Catskill Mountains. There will be foot-tapping music with fiddler Stephen Iachetta leading Shaker Creek on his 1777 Tyrolean violin and delectable hors d'oeuvres prepared by Chef Danyell of Georgia Ray's Caterers in Hudson. Flowers will once again be donated and arranged by Douglas Koch, the renowned florist whose accounts include Bloomingdales, the Helmsley Hotels, the Peninsula Hotel, Plaza Athenee, Elizabeth Arden, Altria, JP Morgan Chase, Solomon Smith Barney, Morgan Stanley, and many others. Mr. Koch was named "New Yorker of the Week" by New York One News for co-founding Village Flower Power, which donates flowers to people with AIDS and teaches them flower arranging techniques. After the festivities at the Thomas Cole house, private dinners will be held at several majestic homes nearby. Tickets are $125 or $100 for members. For tickets, please visit www.thomascole.org to purchase tickets online or call Linda at 518-943-7465, extension 4. The event is themed around Thomas Cole's 1846 painting entitled "The Pic-Nic", featuring Cole with his friends and family enjoying a beautiful summer day with wine, food and music. In the painting, Thomas Cole is seen playing an Italian guitar with special floral detailing which is now on view at Cedar Grove. The guitar is on loan for the season from Alexander Gallery in New York City. The painting is reproduced in full color on the invitation, courtesy of Ruder Finn, Inc., with additional printing donated by Hillcrest Press. The Chair of the event is Lisa Fox Martin, assisted by the event committee Patrick Terenchin, Frank Cuthbert, Jackie Dunn and Ronnie McCue. Dinners will be hosted by Jared Aswegan & Brigit Binns, Jean & Richard Bassin, Pamela & Theodore Belfor, Frank Faulkner & Philip Kesinger, Lisa Fox Martin & Dick May, Mary Ellen & John Gallagher, Geoff Howell, Peter O'Hara & John Garofalo, Mario Pollan & Kevin Moran of (p.m.) wine bar in Hudson, Janeen Sarlin, Betsy & Alfred Scott, Warner Shook & Frank Swim, Matthew Talomie & Michael DeLellis, Brooke & Malcolm Travelstead, Marianne van Lent & Nicholas Goldsmith, Barbara Walter & Bob Reithner, Ethel & Ken Williams, Reggie Young & Nora Johnson, Howard Zar & Ray Kurdziel. |

State Legislative Session Comes to a Close
|
|||
|
The
2008 regularly scheduled Legislative Session ended on Tuesday, June
24th as several last minute deals were struck on issues such as brownfields
reform and incentives for “green” buildings. There were also several
issues left unresolved including a school property tax cap, IDA reform
and relief from rising gasoline prices. Furthermore, the Legislature,
once again, passed a number of union-sponsored labor-related mandates
that would undermine the collective bargaining process at the expense
of public employers and local taxpayers.

Olana
State Historic Site is offering our nineteenth consecutive summer
arts program, The Journey, Children ages 6-12 work in small groups at the picturesque estate of Frederic Church, renowned Hudson River School artist, while learning about different cultures from around the world. Along the way, they'll also learn about Frederic Church’s life, art, and travel experiences. Participants will “journey” to one of the locales visited by Church in the 19th century using art, music, and numerous hands-on activities. This year exotic India will be one of the ports of call. Although Church did not visit India during any of his various travels, the influence of Indian culture and architecture can be seen throughout the mansion due to Church gathering ideas and objects through friends and artists like Lockwood De Forest as well as Eastern artisans here and abroad. Other possible Journey destinations this year include: Mexico, South America, Egypt, and Turkey. Children may participate in one or both sessions however registration is required in order to participate. Olana offers an Ice Cream Social for participants and their families on the Sunday night before each session begins, offering time for families and travelers to get to know one another before the Journey begins! Dates for the Ice Cream Social are July 13 and August 3. Olana, the home and studio of Hudson River School artist Frederic E. Church, is a New York State Historic Site and a National Historic Landmark. Olana is one of seven historic sites and thirteen parks administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Taconic Region. The Olana Partnership is a private not-for-profit organization which works cooperatively with New York State to support the preservation, restoration, development, and improvement of Olana State Historic Site. Catskill Collectibles Announces a New Website for Collectors of Catskill Memorabilia Palenville, New York, April 1, 2008 Catskill Collectibles today announced the opening of its long awaited website, catskillcollectibles.com. Tom Illari and Matt Testoni, partners of the company, are pleased to have created a dedicated website to provide historic Catskill memorabilia to the public. Their goal is to help preserve the history and memorabilia of the Catskills, by making available their collection of postcards, books, regional art and prints of the area including many items such as photographs of the grand hotels and railroad timetables that were part of the daily existence of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Tom’s interest in the Catskills dates from his childhood. Through the years he has researched many books and assembled a regional collection that is a part of that history. His partner, Matt, shares his enthusiasm in learning and appreciating all he can about the Catskills and the people who have lived there and have been a part of its history. Their love of the Region is evident. Matt said, “Life is beautiful here; a sanctuary for us all. Yet, so much about the region, its art and its history is unknown to many.” ABOUT CATSKILL COLLECTIBLES
